Fix Windows 10 Start Menu Not Opening or Search Not Working

I’ve seen quite a few issues with Windows 10’s new Start Menu, but by far the most common problems brought to my attention are the Start Menu simply will not open or the search function will not work.  Of course Microsoft’s “go-to” fix is to complete Windows Updates, but rarely in my experience has that resolved any Start Menu issues.

I’ve found that most of the time this can be resolved quite easily by running a PowerShell command that rebuilds the AppCache:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

powershellstartmenufix

The process may take a moment and you may see some errors flash by, but I’ve had this fix large majority of the Start Menu issues I’ve seen.

If you still have problems…

Microsoft was, in fact, experiencing so many problems with the new Start Menu that they developed a troubleshooting tool specifically for Start Menu/Cortana related problems.  I’ve used this tool with success on a number of computers.

The Start Menu Troubleshooter can be downloaded from MS’s website here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12385/windows-10-troubleshoot-problems-opening-start-menu-cortana

If you STILL have issues after that, create and try another user profile to see if the issue persists outside of the original user.  You might even resort to refreshing/resetting the OS.
